Finished Projects

My finished stitcheries

I wish that I had kept a picture of all of the items I've made, just to have a record. But here are some of my finishes anyway. Not one is perfect and I may not even like them anymore but, that's just the journey of learning skills and trying out new ideas.

Half Square Triangle Quilt

A bad picture (It is a square shape in reality!)! This was my first quilt, Auntie Marge bought me back to sewing with this little quilt. I loved making it. Stitching through printed paper sheets onto 2 face to face pieces of fabric. Slice up on the line and voila! Lots of pieced together squares. This is so versatile, you can make lots of patterns with this block if you sew a dark and a light colour together. I snuck in a poly cotton, much to Auntie's disgust. But it had to be done, it was from a dress I had when I was a size 8 - none of us want to forget that kind of thing! Quilted with buttons, many of which have since fallen out! But this was so much fun and I still have it draped on a chair.

Maggie Bonanomi: On the Courthouse Steps

I made this into a wall hanging. The block is courthouse steps. I really do like woven fabrics, Homespun's and civil war prints, earthy and cosy looking. Flannel and wool appliques which I echo quilted on the machine. The echo quilting foot made this very easy.

Autumn Tumbler Block Quilt

Sizzix cut blocks using left over bits of fabric made most of this lap quilt. I added flannel borders and flannel backing which wasn't problematic with machine quilting. Autumn leaves in the wind was the idea. The acorns are rather large and I just used the colours I had. I embroidered with Perle a very informal wavy line of fly stitch, the leaves are irregularly arranged all the way around. I really like this quilt. It was my first try at machine quilting. Not very good, but good enough for home and it's what spurred me on to learn more about machine quilting.

Drunkards Path Block & Concentric Circle Machine Quilting

I loved making this quilt. There are so many possibilities with the fabric choice and block pattern. I really liked exploring the way you can make the circles whole or intersect with another or appear to do so. I used walking foot circle quilting which didn't take long. Aurifil thread with Quilters Dream Poly batting.

Fig Tree Mini Blossom

A little hanging for my sister who loves bright light colours. These fabrics are Tanya Wheelan. As this was a mini the seams were small and bulky. I clipped and pressed open so that I could machine quilt it. I am really pleased with how it came out.I bought this from Fig Tree, I like the fabrics they design, sunny and happy. The quilts are pretty too. This was fun to make and available as a download pattern: Fig Tree Mini Blossom.

Applique Cushion, Japanese Taupes

Another cute cushion, bought as a kit from Chilford Quilt Show.

Details

  • Machine applique blanket stitch with bondaweb.
  • Hobbs Heirloom cotton wadding.
  • Quilted in the ditch and then around the appliques using free motion.
  • Thread was Aurifil.
  • I experimented with the flower middles, one pearly shell button, two gun metal grey buttons and two applique middles with french knots.

There are more to come but for now I am off to sew!

  1. Hi Lou

Just had a look at all your finished quilts, you have been busy love the colour selections. They are a credit to your hard work you certainly seem to have got to grips with the machine quilting. Keep up the hard work!

  2. Just going to start on a small quilt for the dogs basket only I'm going to back it with fleece. A lady at one of the classes made a snuggle quilt backed with fleece and it felt so soft. Back to the sewing room speak again soon xx

    1. I haven't used fleece yet - with wadding inside? I would love to know how you get on with that, especially the quilting of it. Great for pets. My Charlie boy, who has his big brown head on my lap right now - he has a big cushion which I want to recover and quilt up. Honestly you can't sit still in this house too long for fear of being quilted!

    1. Hiya Frances,
That's great that you have now got your borders done, it will be exciting to attach them, hope that goes smoothly. Sometimes I think a project does better for waiting to be finished, new ideas and skill development. I can't seem to be getting my projects moving along quickly enough and my new ideas are piling up! But for now its time to walk the dog! Take care and thank you so much for stopping by x
